Manufacturing automation for effective process control

Visitors to METALEX will see Renishaw's live manufacturing automation demonstration - integrating a CNC machine installed with the Renishaw machine tool probes, a robot and the Renishaw Equator versatile gauging system – to showcase the ability to monitor key process inputs and continuously improve manufacturing processes for increased productivity.

Simply measuring the output of a manufacturing process using ‘tailgate' inspection is not enough and, more often, too late to control all the variability in a manufacturing process. It is critical that checks and measurements are made before, during and immediately after machining to control both common-cause and special-cause variation.  The Primo™ probing system offers users advantages of automated setting at a very affordable price through a combination of minimal upfront costs, a free, comprehensive training package, and immediate parts replacement. Supplied as standard with the Primo system is the user-friendly GoProbe, which offers a unique combination of software, training materials and user reference tools and mobile apps for Apple iOS and Android devices, for complete part setting, tool setting and probe set-up cycles for easy to use without prior training.

With the ability to compensate for thermal change through re-mastering against a known reference master part on the shop floor, the Renishaw Equator™ flexible gauge can significantly reduce scrap, eliminate bottlenecks and streamline the manufacturing process. It is now offered with the newly released IPC (intelligent process control) software, providing the functionality to fully automate tool offset updates in CNC manufacturing processes. IPC software allows constant monitoring and adjustment of a machining operation, keeping part dimensions close to nominal and well within process control limits. This means that any process drift is quickly corrected, improving part quality and manufacturing capability, along with reducing scrap. The proximity of the Equator gauge to the CNC process allows rapid measurement and process adjustment at the point of manufacture, avoiding time delays or relying on finished part (tailgate) inspection, to enjoy the true automation benefits.

The power of additive manufacturing
Another highlight of the Renishaw booth is its latest metal additive manufacturing system which utilises laser powder bed fusion technology. Renishaw’s 3D metal printing system is fully designed and engineered by Renishaw to be used for serialised production of complex metal components, and offers increased automation and reduced operator touch time.  Come and see a variety of complex 3D printed metal parts all made on Renishaw additive manufacturing systems which might inspire your 3D printing creativity.
