Indonesia’s dynamic packaging industry is well represented at ALLPACK 2017
Indonesia’s packaging industry has never had it so good as the industry has been posting positive growth. The country’s packaging market was valued at 101,232.4 million units in 2016 and with growth projected at a CAGR of 5.2%, the market could reach 130,325.8 million units in 2021. According to a report by ReportLinker, the packaging industry in Indonesia is characterized by packages that enhance the utility of the products through on-the-go, convenience, and sustainability benefits.

Rigid plastic packaging accounts for the biggest market share with growth projected at 3.2% annually during the period 2016-2021. Rigid plastics accounted for a share of 24.9% in 2016 (25,251.1 million units) and is projected to grow at a CAGR of 7.7% during 2016-2021, to reach 36,664.4 million units in 2021. Manufacturers are now option for rigid plastic packaging as it is a cost-effective solution to protect food and beverages during delivery from farm to table, and preserve food over longer durations. These packages also support innovations through different forms and shapes and are lighter in weight.

On the other hand, flexible packaging accounted for a market share of 42% in 2016, or about 42,538.6 million units in 2016, and is forecast to reach 52,448.9 million units in 2021, at a CAGR of 4.3% during 2016-2021, with major usage in the food industry (74% share in 2016). This growth is largely driven by its low cost, flexibility to suit multiple shapes and sizes, convenience (zip-locks, plastic closures), and low-carbon foot print on the environment as compared to rigid plastics.
