Indonesia’s packaging industry has been posting positive growth over the years with packaging market valued at 101,232.4 million units in 2016. Growth projected at a CAGR of 5.2% could put the market at 130,325.8 million units by 2021. A report by ReportLinker said that the packaging industry in Indonesia is characterized by packages that enhance the utility of the products through on-the-go, convenience, and sustainability benefits.
Rigid plastic packaging has the biggest slice of the market share with growth projected at 3.2% annually during the period 2016-2021. Rigid plastics accounted for a share of 24.9% in 2016 (25,251.1 million units) and is projected to grow at a CAGR of 7.7% during 2016-2021, to reach 36,664.4 million units in 2021. With preference for rigid plastic packaging due to its cost-effectiveness in protecting food and beverages during delivery from farm to table, and preservation of food over longer durations, the packaging market is seen as a major sector with rapid developments in the next few years.
On the other hand, flexible packaging accounted for a market share of 42% in 2016, or about 42,538.6 million units in 2016, and is forecast to reach 52,448.9 million units in 2021, at a CAGR of 4.3% during 2016-2021, with major usage in the food industry (74% share in 2016). This growth is largely driven by its low cost, flexibility to suit multiple shapes and sizes, convenience (zip-locks, plastic closures), and low-carbon foot print on the environment as compared to rigid plastics.
