Qatar Plastic Products Company W.L.L. (QPPC) is a leading flexible plastic packaging producer in Qatar. Since 1998, the company has been developing and manufacturing flexible packaging using polyethylene (PE) resins at its facility located at the Mesaieed Industrial City. QPPC is the result of Qatar's aspiration of developing small- and medium-scale industry. Today, QPPC is proud to have been well-recognised not only in Qatar but also throughout the region for being a leading plastic converter.
The International Plastics News – Middle East (IRNE) had the chance to talk to Engr. Mohd A. Rahman Hijji, QPPC General Manager, who provided an overview of the company's various products and how its advanced technology has enabled it to meet and satisfy the requirements of its customers.

IRNE: What are the products that QPPC currently manufactures?
Engr. Hijji
: QPPC produces flexible packaging films for automatic bagging lines and other films for industrial and agricultural applications. Range of our products include FFS (Form, Fill and Seal) Films which contributes more than 80% of our production, shrinkable films and hood; construction foil, blue and black sleeving, greenhouse and agricultural films, general purpose foils, heavy-duty trash bags and top open bags.
To ensure quality, products are extruded in modern blown film lines and all the operations are controlled by a sophisticated computerised system that automatically checks the recipe and the thickness and width of the film. The printing of the products is done using flexographic printing lines of up to 6 colours, which ensures excellent quality of printing.

IRNE: Please discuss briefly your operations.
Engr. Hijji
: QPPC is one of the biggest downstream companies in Qatar developing and manufacturing flexible packaging using PE resins. The company was established on 19 September 1998 at a project cost of QR 42 million and a shared capital of QR 27 million. The facility started commercial production in August 2000 and was inaugurated by His Excellency Abdullah Bin Hamad Al Attiyah (the State of Qatar's Second Deputy Premier and Minister of Energy and Industry) in November 2000. Around 90% of the production is being sold to the local market whilst the balance is marketed in other Gulf countries and in Europe.
Located at the Mesaieed Industrial City, QPPC is a private company owned by three shareholders, each holding one-third share in the company. Qatar Petrochemical Company (QAPCO) is in the business of manufacturing high quality ethylene, LDPE and other petrochemical products. QAPCO is currently the largest producer of LDPE in the Middle East. Qatar Industrial Manufacturing Company (QIMC) was established to encourage the participation of the private sector in the country's economic development through small/medium scale industries and to promote stronger ties between the public and private sectors. FEBO s.p.a (Italy) is one of the largest manufacturers of plastic films and distributors of plastic raw materials within Europe.

IRNE: What are the company's current priorities as far as environment protection is concerned?
Engr. Hijji
: Preservation of the natural environment remains one of QPPC's highest priorities. One of our first actions was to install a plastic waste recycle unit to minimise the impact of our activity on the surrounding environment. It is designed to recycle the waste PE and other plastic films and transform them into a usable raw material.
We also ensure that the raw materials being used are free from dangerous and polluting components by requesting safety data sheets for all kinds of materials. The effect of our activities on the surroundings is monitored during different stages of production.
