The manufacturer-neutral consumer protection portal Kosmetikanalyse has released a report that reveals 25% of the 434 baby creams analysed contain chemical preservatives that can cause massive damage to the sensitive skin of babies.
Even popular brands such as Sebamed Baby Wound Cream, Hipp Babysanft Care Cream, Johnson's Baby Cream (additionally with mineral oil, perfume and microplastics) and Penaten Baby Intensive Care Cream Face & Body are affected.
Health risks for baby's sensitive skin
Chemical preservatives can cause significant damage to babies' delicate skin because their protective barrier is not yet fully developed. These substances can cause allergies and are found in many products, including emulsion paints, adhesives and cleaning agents. However, their use in baby creams is particularly worrying.
A study by the Federal Environment Agency from 2004 already showed that 15 to 20 percent of the population is sensitive to at least one of the common contact allergens. Baby skin is particularly vulnerable due to its still immature protective barrier. Especially against infections and foreign substances, such as aggressive chemical preservatives, which can penetrate unhindered and destroy the skin's own microorganisms. This can lead to increased sensitization and long-term skin problems.
Experts call for action: Günter W. Reichelt, member of the board of directors of Kosmetikanalyse.org, warns about the irresponsibility of using ingredients that can endanger the health of babies.
Alternative preservatives – a solution for safe baby products
However, there are alternative, non-allergenic preservatives that are safer and nourishing at the same time." These alternatives include naturally durable oils such as avocado and jojoba oil, as well as the preservative vitamin E. While these ingredients are more expensive, they offer a safer and more skin-friendly solution.
Parents are urged to pay attention to the ingredients when choosing baby products and find out about possible harmful substances in cosmetics. You can find over 10,000 manufacturer-neutral ingredients and, for example, 880 analyzed baby products with these ingredients on Kosmetikanalyse.org.
