BEING the largest cosmetics consuming market, China has kept an enviable growth in recent years. However, it is an indubitable fact that China’s local brands have not been prospering all along. International brands are constantly expanding to medium-low end market while dominating the high end. The market share of the domestic brands is shrinking, largely due to the lack of strengths in R&D as well as branding and marketing.

But we have also noticed that more and more local brand owners now have realized their own weaknesses and have started investing in research and branding. JALA, whose achievement attracts considerable attention recently, is among the best. With a policy of “Synergy of global resources and cooperation”, JALA has invested vast human and material resources on scientifc projects in skin biology area, along with basic cosmetics research, in order to improve scientific strength of its brands and to obtain driving force for a sustainable development.

Last year, a technology seminar with a theme of “Effcacy Assessment: In Vitro to Human Body” was held in Shanghai. Experts in skin and other related areas from France, China and JALA were invited to give speeches and presentations on the subject, and to discuss and share the cutting-edge dermatological technologies, including hot topics such as “sensitive skin care” as well as “the development and application of skin cell model”, a future trend in industry. During the seminar, Happi Asia interviewed HUANG XIAOQING, director of Consumer Research, JALA R&D Centre.

Synergy of global R&D resources

From the very beginning of the establishment, JALA has persisted in a development policy of combining independent R&D and global cooperation. Natural ingredients sourced worldwide that are safe and effective, and world-leading technologies ensure that its formula and technology suit oriental skin. By 2011, JALA has been awarded 88 national patents and prizes on exterior design, product formula and composition, as well as dozens of products prizes. In 2012, the JALA R&D Centre was established in Caohejing Hi-tech Park in Shanghai, focusing on formula and technology development for skin care, makeups and hair products, with emphasis on safety and natural property. Three advantages — “3-Dimensional skin cell model”, “60 scientific tests” and “space technology” — is claimed by JALA to establish an advantageous position in R&D feld.

3-Dimensional Skin Cell Model Animals testing has become increasingly unpopular globally and China now considers end to mandatory animal testing on cosmetics. To cope with this policy, JALA has successfully cultured “3-Dimensional skin cell model” by using “seeds” from oriental skin cells. Last year this model was evaluated by a expert group constituting academicians and authorities in skin biology and related felds; and it was agreed that the model had achieved a leading level in international cosmetics research.

A 3-Dimensional skin cell model is an in vitro culture technology to construct a full skin tissue structure of epidermis, dermis and layer in-between, and to restore the 3 dimensional structure of skin. Currently JALA has completed the first phase of the skin cell model and progressing from concept to practical application.

It is also a demonstration for the philosophy of “high quality cosmetics exclusively for oriental skins” by JALA. Oriental skin cells are used as “seeds” in the model construction which is mNike Air Max 1 For Sale
