Replacing traditional hinged closures for milk and still beverages in PET with a new 38mm lightweight version is one way to reduce carbon footprint AMONG the ways Dairy and Beverage manufacturers can takes steps towards carbon neutrality is switching to a new 38mm hinged closure targeted at these industries. The lightweight closure, "Galileo" from Bericap, brings new opportunities in packaging of fresh milk, milk based drinks and new beverages for lighter, cheaper and more environmentally friendly packaging, for new functionalities and for new aesthetics. Galileo is Bericap's registered technology for the new range of closures for molding hinged closures in closed position which allows relatively high speed molding and does not require any additional closing operation that is necessary for the traditional hinged closures and offers quite efficient tamper evidence (TE) performance. Moreover, this technology has been used to develop various closures for its light-weighting program in beverages and edible oil or for renewing certain of its traditional hinged closures, with two basic versions: ?1-piece version of CTC type : "Galileo I", currently developed for the new BERICAP light weight 38 mm "press-on" neck finish, and ?2-pieces version : "Galileo II", with hinged transparent PP overcap to visualize the tear-off membrane and dispensing pourer. The latter program covers closures for existing 29/21 press-on neck finish (with standard or long skirt pourer), but is particularly interesting in combination with the new light weight 26/21 neck finish introduced by Bericap as part of its general commitment to sustainable packaging. This closure does focus mainly on the edible oil industry. Significant resin savings With its new press-on neck finish for PET at 2.6g, Galileo I 38 mm at 2.85g offers significant resin savings compared to standard 38 mm, 3-start thread, screw neck finish and corresponding screw closures that are used in its targeted markets. Compared to Bericap 38mm, 3-start thread, screw neck finish at 4.4g and standard 38 mm, 3-start screw closure at 3.3g, for instance, this represents savings of 2.25g per bottle, or almost 30% in weight. Whereas compared to the standard screw neck finish used in the milk and juice market in Italy at 5.6g on average, this represents a resin saving of 3.35g per bottle or almost 40%. For any 100 million bottles, this lightweight 38 mm program would contribute to save between 225 and 345 tons of resin or between €300 000 and €500 000 worth of PET and HDPE resins. Such savings in turn would help to reduce the carbon footprint by up to 2,600 tons of CO2 emissions. Overall, this new range of closures brings to brand owners the attractiveness of new design and functionality of the hinge, opening new opportunities for single serve beverages, and the possibility to communicate on resin savings and lower carbon footprint of the new packaging. For bottlers, the advantages include economy on plastic raw material for the bottle and for the closure, economy with press-on capping equipment, better productivity and robustness of the capping process with lower defect level, less downtime, and better cost effectiveness, especially on ACF lines. In terms of product integrity, the efficient seal can keep aseptic conditions for beverages sensitive to microorganisms and the well-designed secondary seal keeps contents safe during transportation. In addition, consumers will also benefit: the ease with which the cap can be opened (especially for senior consumers), efficient and reliable tear off TE band, andreactive hinge with 180?opening position. Bericap's Galileo I 38mm is manufactured in France, and will be soon manufactured in some other of its key manufacturing premises.Air Huarache Run Ultra BR
