The debut of Vietnam's first dedicated show for the industry, Plastics & Rubber Vietnam 2007 in Ho Chi Minh City last year was a resounding success with 115 exhibitors from 20 countries including pavilions from Austria, Czech Republic, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand. Over 5,700 professional visitors from 35 countries visited the exhibition. 86.8% came from the Southern region of Vietnam where 80% of the plastics processing industry is located. The success of its inauguration further affirms Vietnam's position as a promising leading and regional importer of processing machinery and raw materials. Southeast Asia's fastest growing nation will once host Plastics & Rubber Vietnam in 2008. The exhibition could not be more timely. Accession to the World Trade Organisation combined with its membership in the ASEAN, comprising a market of 560 million people, means Vietnam now has both full exposure to the opportunities offered by both global markets and those of its Southeast Asian neighbors. Vietnam is Southeast Asia's fastest growing economy. Its Five Year Socio-Economic Development Plan 2006-2010 targets at least 7.5-8 % annual GDP growth, annual export growth of 16% and industrial products to account for 75% of total export turnover by 2010. The Government has plans for as many as 68 new industrial parks and expansion of existing ones. Vietnam is also home to a vibrant private plastics processing sector hungry to upgrade its technology. Vietnam is presently the world's third largest rubber producer. It exported 659,000 tons in 2006, 31% more than in 2005. Vietnam exports majority of its rubber in unprocessed or semi-processed form. The rubber processing industry absorbs at best 50,000 tons each year so there is good potential for future industry expansion. The current Five-Year Plan, for example, calls for the establishment of a tire plant to make 2 million tires annually. The domestic rubber sector will continue to improve the level of rubber processing and shift to growing those rubber tree varieties that have the highest commercial value. The show is jointly organized by Bangkok Exhibition Services (a member of Allworld Exhibitions) and Messe D焥seldorf Asia and supported by the globally acclaimed K, the world誷 no. 1 trade fair for plastics and rubber. The show's organizing partner in Vietnam is VCCI Exhibition Service Co Ltd who will act as an important link between buyers and sellers in their venture for new markets and opportunities.
