French auto supplier Faurecia SA expects the next generation of car seating to eventually remove polyurethane foam. Integrated with the concept "Sustainable Comfort Seat," the company replaces the foam inside the seat with two sheets of injection moulded thermoplastic PU. The design is similar to the structure in some athletic shoes and moulded office chair seats. The twin-sheet structure consists of a seat system that is 17% lighter than common seats and 30mm thinner, which enables more legroom for rear-seat passengers. The whole seat also employs an injection-moulded nylon and long- glass fibre structural frame that substitutes steel, and an injection-moulded head restraint to replace foam and steel. The "sustainable comfort seat" is part of Faurecia's Light Attitude car interior design, which highlights the substrate in places and covers other portions with bright yellow textiles on the instrument panel.
