Rio Tinto collaborates with Ma aden on-going projects

Rio Tinto Alcan has inked two major agreements with Ma''aden, a Saudi Arabian mining company, to improve the mining company''s mine- to-metal aluminium project (AP) in Saudi Arabia. The technology transfer agreement gives Ma''aden an industry- leading AP smelting technology, and project support for other activities as stipulated in the cooperation agreement. The technology transfer agreement is the first industrial application of AP37 technology in a greenfield project, with the task of enhancing Ma''aden''s facility to AP39 technology in the future. AP technology as used in the aluminium industry is the most energy-efficient and environment-friendly smelter technology available in the market. The technology transfer negotiation is also anticipated to hasten the feasibility-planning phase for the aluminium smelter at Ras Az Zawr. With the cooperation agreement, Rio Tinto Alcan will provide different forms of support for Ma''aden including technical services, key personnel, R&D assistance, management services and aluminium support.
