It's the ceramic wall clocks indicating time in major world cities and comfy designer-made chairs in the reception area that give a prospective client and visitor a first positive insight into the international style that characterizes the management of Tung Yu Hydraulic Machinery Co., Ltd. The headquarters and vast new factory complex of this ISO 9001:2000 company in Nantou City are testimony to an ongoing success story that dates back to 1983, the year in which the brothers Yang, all three mechanical engineers of humble origin, vowed to work together to make their fortune. From the start they struck on the most effective way to run a family business. Each would head up his own division of the company. It was the early eighties, a new era had just opened for Taiwan industry and the economy was about to take off. The industrial infrastructure needed rubber-based products and factories needed the machines and presses made by Tung Yu. "We saw a future in rubber hydraulic machines and were determined to make ourselves masters of the game only beginning to diversify after winning our spurs and cementing our reputation as a rubber hydraulic machinery specialist," says company president Yang Chen Pin. The rubber industry began picking up in 2002/3 and in 2004 the company inked a trail blazing strategic alliance and Technical Cooperation agreement with the French REP International group, the first time two competitors in different branches of the industry had joined forces to market a product. They successfully developed a new type RTIP rubber injection-molding machine and REP became the marketing and after-sales service agent for the TUNG YU compression range for Europe and all Americas. "It's a perfect arrangement and a new model for working together' Yang says "because they do all the marketing in Europe and America while we do it in Asia." There was synergy and recognition in the partnership. Although turning out different products the two companies were very similar in the way they approached the market. "We understood one another - they wanted to think in our way and we in theirs and this has led to an annual exchange of programs, engineers and QC personnel." Yang elaborates. The seeds of this corporate partnership have already blossomed into a 10% increase in REP's 2007 turnover of US$75 million (physical year ended in March) and a15% hike in Tung Yu turnover of US$40 million the same year. That doesn誸 mean to say the company isn誸 looking for new world to conquer, not to mention a new platoon of agents to rev up sales in some of the 61 countries that already use their products - from Japan and Eastern Europe to Turkey, India and Russia. On top of this there's Tung Yu's new expanded brand line on which the benefits are much larger. With the extension of the company誷 production area, all 16,500 sq.m meters of it, capacity in 2006 was boosted for heavy hydraulic machinery weighing in from 5 to 10,000 tons. The company誷 plant in Ningbo China - Tung Yu (Ningbo) Hydraulic Industries Co., Ltd., is another source of corporate pride. It achieved ISO-9001:2000 quality assurance certification in 2006 and China National Advanced High-Tech Enterprises Certification in 2007 Ltd. Spread over an area of 36,000 sq.m it went on line in 2002 to join mass production and sales. Customization is Tung Yu's core strength and its reputation has been built on a diverse line of rubber machinery with different presses that adapt to different vulcanization technologies and cater for a wide spectrum of rubber based products.
