棗Mr. Tom Woods
T.W. Woods Group is a family company that prides itself on traditions of loyalty, self-reliance and service. For more than 50 years T.W.Woods has consistently pioneered the development of practical solutions to meet the demands of various local and international engineering and manufacturing sectors. The company was initially established on the northern shore of Lake Macquarie, New South Wales, Australia. It later moved closer to the hub of the modern day work centre and is now situated at Tomago, retaining its original site in Boolaroo. T.W. Woods supplies materials handling technology, including transfer chutes and loading gates to big mining and energy companies in Australia. Company Director Tom Woods shared with International Metalworking News for Asia (IMNA) their traditional values, team spirit and technology wins as it expands its metal fabrication, coal and ore handling technology throughout Australia and internationally. IMNA: How did you start your company, what previous experiences made you confident that you could succeed in this field? Woods: The company was started by our father, Thomas William Woods, in June 1963 as Power Service Company Pty Ltd. He also started T.W.Woods Construction in April 1966. The business was initially set up to service the major expansion of new power stations and electricity distribution infrastructure that was taking place in the Hunter Valley region of New South Wales, a major mining and energy region. Dad started the company because the organization he was working for at that time went into administration, placing many jobs and projects in jeopardy. These projects on which our father was working had to be completed, so he saw this as an opportunity to start a business, which was initially involved in providing site services to the new power stations under construction. After completion of the power stations we had to find new types of work, new projects we could become involved with and a new base from which to operate close to these opportunities. IMNA: What difficulties did you encounter, and how did you resolve to overcome them? Woods: Funding the new company was the first challenge, followed by sourcing work and gaining the trust of customers so we would have a sustainable foundation for progress. From the outset, we strove to provide quality products and services in accordance with customer specifications. We always ran the company to ensure it had minimum exposure to debt and was always in a position to pay its own way. This is a self-reliant philosophy we still follow today. IMNA: What business model differentiates T.W. Woods from its competitors? Woods: We have always endeavored to manufacture all aspects of a project in-house to be able to maintain complete control over the construction process, and to ensure quality and supply time reliability. In order to do this, we had to develop and manufacture specialized metalworking machinery ourselves, which saved money and enabled us to have machinery and capabilities that no one else had. This allowed us to provide a subcontract service to competitors and ensured that we always maintained continuous work from them, as well as directly from customers on their projects. We now specialize in-plate fabrication, press brake work, CAD/CAM plasma cutting, heavy plate rolling, abrasive blasting and industrial painting, including mechanical fabrication.
