Food Pacific Manufacturing Journal
THE QUOTE from Ralph Waldo Emerson comes to mind with this month’s issue. For many of us – after enjoying decades of fast food, salty snacks, sugary drinks and all that is too tasty to ignore – the time has probably come to gain back our ‘first wealth’. Or maybe to just hold back so as not to lose what’s left of it. Most of the time our choices are now driven by our desire to stay healthy. This is what market research firms are saying about consumers in Asia. In their survey of companies, these firms have noted that health and nutrition will be the driving force behind food production now and in the years to come, with demand mostly coming from the growing middle class down to the poor and undernourished. Our outlook report for 2014 offers more, with insight from executives from the processing and packaging industries.
Also on the topic of health, our report in beverage features Pere Ocean (Singapore) and Jachin Co. Ltd (South Korea) leading makers of enhanced/fortified water. Our section on health & nutrition includes reports on food allergies and intolerances.
In this issue, we are also introducing a new section called expert feature. Our first technical report is on sensory measurement written by Dr Miraflora Gatchalian, CEO of Quality Partners Company, Ltd, Philippines and founding president of the Philippine Association of Food Technologists, Inc. (PAFT). She is also a member of the Editorial Advisory Board of FoodPacific Manufacturing Journal.
